Holiday at Home August 2025
Following the success of its Holiday at Home programme in the last
couple of years St. Mary’s Church is once again organising a week of
varied activities for all those who fancy trying something different or
just meeting people informally. It will be held in Oxted Community
Hall either in the St. Mary’s Space or in the Meeting Room from
Monday August 4th until Friday August 8th and is open to all. Each
day there will be a different activity that is suitable for everybody
with no previous experience required with coffee/tea, cake and
fruit provided, finishing with a light lunch. The activities all start at
10.00am and including the lunch will run until 2.00pm.
The week starts on the Monday with a series of handicraft activities
on offer including knitting, sewing, tapestry and embroidery with all
the necessary materials provided.
On Tuesday morning there will be the usual Wobble class which
takes place throughout the year. Wobble is a gentle seated exercise
that is suitable for all, including people in wheelchairs. This is the
only activity for which there is a charge – of £5.00 for the instructor.
Even if you don’t fancy joining in the Wobble class you are still
welcome to come along at about 11.00am to join in for coffee and
the lunch.
On Wednesday there is to be an Eco craft activity with the chance to
compose some interesting pieces of art work using natural materials
such as leaves, flower heads and seeds which will all be provided.
Last year this proved to be very popular and a good number of
creations were put on display in the St. Mary’s Space.
On Thursday there is to be an informal games session with a variety
of games on offer that can take all morning or be over fairly quickly
thus providing the opportunity to try several different games.
Games of all sorts will be provided but you are welcome to bring
your own along to play. Jigsaw puzzles will also be available.
On Friday morning the usual Meeting Place with coffee or tea,
delicious home-made cakes and conversation will take place. In
addition there will be the opportunity, if you wish, to pit your
wits against our quiz master -alias James the Rector who always
manages to think up an interesting variety of questions. Meeting
Place runs every Friday throughout the year normally without the
quizzes, starting at 9.30am and going on until 11.30am and is open
to all.
There is no need to book for any of the sessions described above
– just turn up to as many activities as you fancy, and there is no set
charge although donations towards the cost of the refreshments
and/or the running costs of The Space would be very welcome. Even
of you don’t fancy joining in with the activities you are welcome to
come and enjoy other people’s company over a cup of tea or coffee.
Other Activities Organised by
Members of St. Mary’s Church,
Oxted
Three years ago St. Mary’s Church
bought the space in Oxted
Community Hall that had previously
been occupied by the charity
Crossroads. Since then St. Mary’s
Church has been developing a
programme of activities that benefit
the community of Oxted. This is still
an evolving programme but already
includes an interesting variety of
activities, some regular and some as
occasional happenings.
On the first Wednesday of the
month there is a Community Lunch
from 12 noon to which all are
welcome.
On the first Friday of the month
there is a session called Hear Here
when five fully trained people are on
hand to check NHS hearing aids and
renew batteries if necessary.
On the first Saturday of the month
from 9.00am there is a Community
Prayer breakfast to which all are
welcome.
On Thursday mornings from
10.00am there is Baby Space; a
chance for mums with babies under
one year old to meet up and chat
over a cup of coffee or tea and
enjoy some homemade cake. A
Youth Group meets on Thursday
evenings.
On Friday mornings from
midday there is Lemon Drops; an
informative breastfeeding
session led by skilled advisors for all
expectant and new mums.
More details on all of the above are
available from the Parish Office or
on the St. Mary’s Church website
