Successful Open Gardens Day Raises £9000
The Oxted One
World Group
would like to
thank the 5
garden owners
who opened
their private
gardens for
viewing as well
as Paul Belok,
the overall
Organiser, all
the helpers
who arranged
refreshments,
plant sales and a raffle together with the 420 visitors who helped
raise over £9000 for the Oxted One World Group Charity, which
funds projects in the developing world, on Bank Holiday Monday.
The weather stayed fine so the charity was able to maximise the
money raised. A few photos are attached to the accompanying
e-mail to show the magnificent display of plants at some of the
gardens open for the afternoon.
The Oxted One World Group is a local charity, founded in 1983.
Organised by volunteers, its small overheads are covered by
subscriptions from its 350 members. It raises around £40,000
a year for overseas aid projects and is well supported by local
churches and schools. Donations may be made online via

Lion President Tony, his wife Sue and
Lion Rita attended Marden Lodge
School at the opening of their new
library to which COGs contributed
£1,000. A splendid area for the
children to enjoy the fascination of
books.
It was the start of the Lions year on 1st
July and at an Afternoon Tea kindly
hosted by Lion Secretary John Quincey
and Paula, Lion Tony Gordon handed
over the President’s collar and duties
to Lion Rita Reissland.
Just two Lions from the Club attended
the UK’s Multiple District Convention
in mid-May in Llandudno. A chance
to catch up with old friends from
across the country. One of the items
under discussion was the collection
of spectacles for onward transmission
to the third world. Over one hundred
thousand spectacles were handed
over at Convention. There are COG
Lions’ bins in doctors’ surgeries and
pharmacies all over Tandridge for the
donation of unwanted spectacles (and
hearing aids – we can deal with them
too...)
We will be on Godstone Green for the
Bank Holiday Fete again his year, but
with much reduced presence due to
lack of new fit members.
Lack of Members hasn’t stopped
our efforts with the youngsters – we
have supported Whyteleafe School’s
breakfast Club for the summer term.
And look out for the dinosaur display
at East Surrey Museum supported by
COGs – take your little ones along –
dinosaurs are ‘awesome’ !!
One of the Club’s greatest
achievements was the foundation
of the Tandridge Lions Talking
Newspaper over 40 years ago, to
be run entirely independently. The
Talking Newspaper recently held its
a Trustee of the Newspaper,
of Godstone Age Concern and
Tandridge Club for the Visually
Impaired. She was also a
long-time Trustee and former
Chairman of Sight4Surrey, the
organisation which champions
the visually impaired and hard
of hearing in the County. If you
or anyone you know has trouble
reading print, why not ring Mike
on 01342 834223 to discuss the
possibility of receiving the Talking
Newspaper – it’s absolutely free....
